AI language models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini sometimes output special Unicode characters that are technically invisible but can cause problems when you paste text into other tools, databases, or publishing platforms. Common culprits include:

• Zero-width spaces (U+200B) — used in some systems to indicate word boundaries
• Byte Order Marks (U+FEFF) — encoding markers that can appear as a strange character at the start of text
• Directional marks (U+200E/F) — left-to-right and right-to-left control characters

These are harmless in most cases but can break regex patterns, confuse APIs, or appear as garbled symbols in some apps.

When you copy text from ChatGPT, Claude, or similar AI tools, it often contains Markdown formatting syntax that renders as bold/italic in some apps but shows as raw symbols in others. For example:

• **this** becomes this in Markdown editors but shows literally as **this** in Word, Gmail, or plain text fields
• # My Heading becomes a heading in Notion but appears with the hash symbol in other tools
• Filler phrases like "Certainly!" or "In conclusion," are verbal tics AI models use that sound unnatural in published writing

These are optional options turned off by default:

• Normalize quotes — converts curly/smart quotes (" " ' ') to straight ASCII quotes (" '). Useful for code, CSV files, or systems that don't support Unicode quotes.
• Replace em dashes — converts em dashes (—) and en dashes (–) to simple hyphens ( - ). Useful for plain text files, email clients, or older publishing systems.

Only enable these if you specifically need them — smart quotes and em dashes are actually correct typography in most published writing.
